I know I’ve been in Korea for quite some time…

Belum juga setahun sih gue tinggal di Korea, tapi gue sudah banyak tau dan mengalami beberapa situasi dan kebiasaan-kebiasaan di Korea yang (kadang) menjengkelkan tapi juga lucu sebenarnya. These remarks below are posted by foreigners living in Korea, in a Facebook group called You know you’ve been in Korea too long if… I got a crack reading these posts, ehehe… Absolutely true :D

So, you know you’ve been in Korea for a while when:

you have Koreans commenting on your proficiency with chopsticks (I get that A LOT)

you wear mini skirts in 2 feet of snow (cewek-cewek Korea menganut paham ‘beauty is killing’)

you have become accustomed to pretty much everybody loudly exclaiming..”look it is a foreigner!” (Orang Korea “Ahh, Indo..”; Gue “Aniyo, Indonesia”; Orang Korea “Ahhh, Indo”; Gue “Ne, Indo (pasrah aja deh…)”. Indo = India)

you bow when you greet people all the time (just bow even though you don’t know the person)

you put up 2 fingers (peace sign) when you get your picture taken, and say “kimchi” or “bwweee” (kimchi brings peace)

the washroom for your favorite restaurant is located out the door, down an alley, upstairs two flights in the next building and inside the KFC (gak modal banget yak gak ada WC sendiri)

you eat things you have never eaten before even if you have no idea what they are because they are ‘mashisoyo’ and very good for health (Korean food are mashisoyo!)

you don’t mind paying for a hotel room without a bed

you feel indignant when people call Kim-bab “sushi” (it’s a kind of sushi, not sushi)

you wanna slap the next kid that walks up to you and says “helloooo, nice to meet you. I”m fine thank you and you?” (the first sentence the kids are taught in schools i guess)

instead of saying “no”, you just make an ‘X’ with your hands (did this when I didn’t speak any Korean. Pork no no sambil nyilangin tangan di depan badan)

motorcycles on the sidewalk instead of the road seems normal to you. and no one wears a helmet! (Jakarta’s sidewalks all over again…)

you get side-swiped HARD by an ajumma who literally does not see you/refuses to acknowledge you exist because you are young (ajumma is Korean for older ladies/married women, and yes, they can be so rude at times)

you see ajummas squat down at a pedestrian crossing while waiting for the lights to change (ngejongkrok aja gitu kayak orang mau beol di pinggir jalan…hal yang aneh…)

you are starting to have a favourite brand of soju (well, they all taste the same for me :D )

when you finishee your lunchee (Koreans always put -ee behind every English words)

you eat your meals as fast as possible…almost like it’s a race (Gosh, I despise this. I don’t think they even chew the food)

if you consider a pair of scissors an everyday kitchen utensil (they cut meat, vegetables, kimchi, with scissors. And now I do the same, ehehe)

And the list go on and on and on and on….. :D
